The Twin Baby Checklist: What You Need Two Of (and What You Don’t)

When you’re expecting twins, the gear question gets expensive fast. The instinct is to take a standard baby checklist and multiply everything by two. Resist that instinct — it’s the fastest way to fill your home with stuff you don’t need.

After living it, here’s our honest breakdown.

Things you genuinely need two of

  • Safe sleep spaces. Each baby needs their own crib or bassinet. This one is non-negotiable for safety.
  • Car seats. No way around it — one each, from day one.
  • Daily clothing basics. Onesies and sleepers disappear into the laundry at an astonishing rate. You need plenty, though “plenty” still doesn’t mean two of everything in every size.
  • Bottles and feeding supplies, if bottle feeding. Running out mid-rotation at 3 a.m. is not an experience you want.

Things one is enough of

  • Changing station. You change one baby at a time. One station, well stocked.
  • Bathtub. Newborn twins are bathed one at a time anyway.
  • Most “nice to have” gadgets. Bottle warmers, wipe warmers, fancy gliders — if you want them at all, start with one and see if it earns a second.

Twin-specific items worth researching

A few categories work differently for twins and deserve real research before you buy: a double stroller (the single biggest gear decision a twin family makes — tandem vs. side-by-side changes your daily life), a twin feeding pillow (game-changing if you plan to feed both at once), and a baby monitor that can watch two sleep spaces. We’ll cover how to choose each of these in detail in future posts.

The honest truth about twin gear

The best money we spent was on things that saved time or made solo-parenting two babies possible. The worst money we spent was on duplicate gadgets “just in case.” When in doubt: buy one, see if it works, and remember that a second one is always just a delivery away.
