Surviving the First Three Months With Newborn Twins

When we brought our twins home from the hospital, I remember standing in the living room thinking: there are two of them and two of us, and somehow we are still outnumbered.

The first three months with twins are a blur of feeding, changing, and trying to remember which baby you just fed. This post is a short, honest list of what actually helped us.

1. Write everything down

With one baby, you can keep track in your head. With two, you cannot. We kept a simple log of who ate, when, and how much. It sounds excessive until you are on your third night feed and cannot remember which twin you fed forty minutes ago.

2. Synchronize schedules, even when it feels difficult

The best advice we received: when one twin wakes to feed, wake the other too. Letting each baby follow their own schedule means someone is always awake, and that someone is never you sleeping. It saved our sanity.

3. Accept that fair does not mean identical

One of our twins was a champion eater. The other treated every bottle like a negotiation. We wasted energy trying to keep everything perfectly equal. Twins are two different people from day one.

4. Lower the bar for everything else

For three months, dinner was whatever could be eaten with one hand. The apartment was a mess. None of it mattered. The only jobs that matter: babies fed, babies safe, parents mostly sane.

If you are in the middle of it right now: it gets better, and faster than you think. Around the three-month mark, something shifts. The fog starts to lift, and you begin to feel like a family again.
